The name Danyadara is a simplification of two sanskrit words, Dhanya and Dhara.. together they mean Blessed Earth which fits perfectly with us.
Danyadara is a not-for-profit permaculture project focused on land regeneration. Our goal is to reverse and mitigate desertification in Andalucia through sustainable agriculture techniques, creating a legacy that will inspire the region for years to come.
In 2011 Vidya Heisel, a world renowned yoga teacher and visionary, came to Spain with a desire of opening her own retreat centre. She fell in love with a renovated old olive farm in the foothills of the Sierra de Grazalema. Vidya was attracted to the sense of spaciousness and beautiful views of the rolling hills. However, she soon discovered that the land itself was in poor condition suffering from desertification and saw an opportunity to change this. Along with colleagues and friends they started planting trees to encourage more biodiversity. After establishing the retreat, she began to research ways in which she could create a not-for-profit project to fully transform the dry ground into abundant and thriving land. In 2016 she enlisted the help of permaculture designer, Doug Crouch and together they created an ambitious long term vision… Danyadara was born!
A year on and the team is going strong with the help of a keen and enthusiastic bunch of volunteers. We have worked hard to transform part of our current premises from dry and desolate patches of land to flourishing edible gardens. We use natural permaculture techniques without the use of any chemicals in order to keep the soil happy and healthy to encourage yield after yield.
From creating the garden and harvesting edibles for Suryalila kitchen to social media and marketing, we continue to follow Danyadara’s dream.
