Today is officially World Day to Combat Desertification & Drought 2017! With a growing importance in joining the international community together to combat these issues, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 17th as the official day in 1994. The purpose of this World Day is to promote public awareness of land degradation and to draw attention to the implementation of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). With over one third of the world´s land surfaced threatened by desertification, it is more important than ever to spread the word and reverse these devastating effects!
This week we have been busy little bees at Danyadara.. In aid of #2017WDCD we have hosted a couple of awareness raising events. On Tuesday evening we guided a tour of our edible permaculture gardens and held a presentation showcasing some of our homemade videos that draw attention to the importance of rebuilding the soil through sustainable agricultural techniques. Wednesday evening was all about getting hands on and back to nature with our volunteer watering session. We invited participants to grab a watering can and give some well needed hydration to our dry soil and thirsty plants! We were very proud and inspired to engage enthusiastic individuals within the gardens and educate them on what’s happening in Andalusia and the rest of the world!
Here at Danyadara we really do get by with a little help from our friends… so if you want to join our efforts in raising awareness, head on over to our Facebook album and share it with the hashtag #2017WDCD. Be part of the story!
Lets make everyday a day to combat desertification!
